Mark Pitcher of Stinchcombe Hill Golf Club claimed the 2018 Foremost Assistant Professionals’ Championship in dramatic fashion at The Oxfordshire, prevailing in a 100-yard sudden-death shootout to claim the title.

Generously supported once again by Srixon/Cleveland Golf, the championship saw 130 Foremost Assistant Professionals travel from all corners of the U.K. to battle it out for a prize fund of £5,000, with the winner taking home a cheque for £1,000 and a 2019 Srixon staff contract.

On a day of low scoring with 21 rounds of par or better carded, it was Stinchcombe Hill’s Mark Pitcher and Hallowes’ Isaac Simpson who were tied at the top with matching scores of four under par 68.

One hole of sudden-death wasn’t enough to separate the two players, so a 100 yard nearest-the-pin shootout was used to determine the winner, in which Pitcher prevailed.

“I’m thrilled to have come out on top today,” commented the Gloucestershire-based Pro. “It feels amazing to have won an event of this size with all of the Foremost Assistant Pros here.

“I got off to a bit of a slow start with a couple of early bogeys, but managed to start swinging it well as I got a bit of rhythm and made six birdies to get to four under,” continued Pitcher.

“Stinchcombe Hill is a fairly short course, so I’ve really learned to control my wedge distances and that definitely played to my advantage in the 100-yard shootout which was nice.”

Commenting on behalf of Foremost, Managing Director Andy Martin said, “This is the third staging of our annual Assistants’ Championship, and it continues to grow year-on-year thanks to the support of both the Assistant Professionals taking part, and our sponsor, Srixon/Cleveland Golf.

“The event is a great opportunity for us to meet our future Foremost members, and if today is anything to go by, the outlook is bright for the next generation of Head Professionals.

“We were lucky enough to have great weather again this year, and the players certainly took advantage of the favourable conditions to shoot some great scores around what is a demanding test from start to finish.”
